Madhya Pradesh (MP) is fort heaven — ancient kingdoms, Rajput, Bundela, Maratha, and Mughal battles — and the forts here are massive, beautiful, and full of stories.

Here’s a well-planned list of important forts of Madhya Pradesh, along with a travel route you can actually follow!

Major Forts of Madhya Pradesh

1. Gwalior Fort (Gwalior)

  • “The Pearl Among Fortresses”; massive and perched on a steep hill.

  • Famous for Man Singh Palace (blue-tiled facade).

2. Datia Fort (Datia)

  • Near Jhansi (actually close to UP border).

  • A stunning, lesser-known 7-storey fort-palace.

3. Orchha Fort Complex (Orchha)

  • Raj Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, Sheesh Mahal.

  • The most fairy-tale royal town.

4. Chanderi Fort (Chanderi)

  • Beautiful medieval fort with Islamic and Rajput architectural mix.

  • Famous for “Khooni Darwaza” (Bloody Gate).

5. Raisen Fort (Near Bhopal)

  • Historic hilltop fort, site of many battles.

6. Asirgarh Fort (Burhanpur)

  • “The Gateway to the South”; massive fort atop a Satpura hill.

  • Called impregnable during Mughal times.

7. Mandu (Fortified City) (Mandu)

  • Romantic ruins spread over miles (Jahaz Mahal, Hindola Mahal, Baz Bahadur’s Palace).

  • UNESCO World Heritage tentative list.

8. Dhar Fort (Dhar)

  • Old Hindu, Afghan, and Mughal era fortifications.

9. Garh Kundar Fort (near Tikamgarh)

  • Hidden Bundela fort; very few tourists.

10. Ajaigarh Fort (near Khajuraho)

  • Stunning isolated fort on a hilltop.

  • Ruins, temples, panoramic views.

11. Narwar Fort (Shivpuri district)

  • Old fort associated with Raja Bhoj and medieval heroes.


Travel Route for Fort Tour of MP

✅ Ideal Trip: 10–15 Days
✅ Best Time: October to March


✨ Route Plan

1. Start: Gwalior

  • Explore Gwalior Fort (must spend at least 1 day).

  • Visit Teli ka Mandir and Saas Bahu temples inside the fort.


2. Move to: Datia (45 mins drive)

  • Visit the grand Datia Fort (Also called Govind Mandir).


3. Move to: Orchha (1-hour drive)

  • Stay 1–2 days at Orchha Fort Complex.

  • Sunset at Chaturbhuj Temple.

  • Light and Sound show at the fort.


4. Move to: Chanderi (2 hours drive)

  • Visit Chanderi Fort and medieval ruins.

  • Explore ancient stepwells and Jain temples.


5. Move to: Bhopal / Raisen (4-hour drive)

  • Visit Raisen Fort (day trip from Bhopal).

  • Optionally explore Bhopal lakes and palaces too.


6. Move to: Mandu (via Indore, 3–4 hours)

  • Spend 2 days exploring Mandu Fortified City.

  • Jahaz Mahal (“Ship Palace”) at sunrise is magical!


7. Move to: Dhar (1-hour drive)

  • Visit Dhar Fort, linked to Parmar dynasty and later rulers.


8. Move to: Burhanpur (Asirgarh Fort) (5-hour drive)

  • Huge fort, dramatic hilltop setting.


9. Move to: Khajuraho region (Ajaigarh Fort) (7–8 hour drive; or split the journey)

  • Trek to Ajaigarh Fort.

  • Optionally visit Khajuraho Temples (World Heritage Site).


Quick Travel Line:

Gwalior → Datia → Orchha → Chanderi → Raisen → Bhopal → Mandu → Dhar → Burhanpur → Khajuraho/Ajaigarh

  • Garh Kundar Fort (near Tikamgarh): If you love hidden, untouched forts, you can do a side trip from Orchha or Chanderi.
