Azam Jah & Princess Durru Shehvar: A Royal Love Story of Legacy and Elegance
The enchanting tale of Azam Jah and Princess Durru Shehvar—a royal bond that bridged two great empires.

Introduction

The love story of Prince Azam Jah and Princess Durru Shehvar embodies elegance, diplomacy, and cultural fusion. Azam Jah, the eldest son of the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, married Princess Durru Shehvar, the daughter of the last Ottoman Caliph, Abdulmejid II. Their marriage united two great dynasties, blending distinct yet rich cultural heritages.

The Royal Backgrounds

1. Azam Jah – The Prince of Hyderabad

Prince Azam Jah, born in 1907, was the eldest son of Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last ruling Nizam of Hyderabad. Groomed to succeed his father, he represented Hyderabad on global platforms. His aristocratic charm and composed nature made him a distinguished royal figure.

2. Princess Durru Shehvar – The Ottoman Beauty

Born in 1914 in Turkey, Princess Durru Shehvar was the daughter of Abdulmejid II, the last Caliph of the Ottoman Empire. Her education in France and Turkey gave her a global perspective. Intelligent and sophisticated, she carried her modern outlook into her new life in Hyderabad.

A Royal Marriage of Diplomacy and Culture

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, arranged the marriage of Azam Jah and Durru Shehvar in 1931. This union was not just a personal relationship but a strategic alliance preserving the legacy of the Ottoman royal family. Their wedding took place in Nice, France, with dignitaries and royals from around the world in attendance.

Life in Hyderabad

After their wedding, the couple settled in Hyderabad. Princess Durru Shehvar embraced her role in society and contributed significantly to modernization efforts.

  • Education Reforms: She established institutions like the Durru Shehvar Children’s Hospital and supported women’s education.
  • Philanthropy: She actively worked on social welfare programs that improved health and living conditions.
  • Fashion and Elegance: She introduced Western-influenced fashion while preserving traditional Hyderabadi royal aesthetics.

Challenges and Legacy

Despite their royal status, Azam Jah and Princess Durru Shehvar faced difficulties in their personal life, which led to their eventual separation. However, their legacy continued through their children, Prince Mukarram Jah and Prince Muffakham Jah, who played crucial roles in Hyderabad’s history.

Princess Durru Shehvar later settled in London, but Hyderabad continued to revere her. She remained a respected figure known for her grace, wisdom, and humanitarian efforts. Her impact on women’s rights and social development in Hyderabad remains significant today.

Conclusion

The marriage of Azam Jah and Princess Durru Shehvar stands as a testament to cultural unity, diplomacy, and royal heritage. Although their personal lives took different turns, their contributions to Hyderabad’s cultural and social landscape remain invaluable. Their story continues to captivate historians and royal enthusiasts, symbolizing a fascinating era of Indo-Ottoman relations.
