The Royal Family of Jubbal: Guardians of a Himalayan Legacy

Nestled amidst the cedar forests and apple orchards of present-day Himachal Pradesh lies the former princely state of Jubbal — a kingdom whose history stretches back centuries and whose rulers belonged to the illustrious Rathore clan of Suryavanshi Rajputs. The Royal Family of Jubbal traces its lineage to the ancient rulers of Sirmur and preserves a remarkable legacy of resilience, governance, and progressive vision in the Himalayan hills.

Origins of the Jubbal Royal Family

The history of Jubbal is deeply intertwined with the medieval hill states of the western Himalayas. The rulers of Jubbal belonged to the Rathore Rajput clan, traditionally associated with solar lineage (Suryavanshi) ancestry and renowned for their martial heritage and statecraft.

According to tradition, the origins of the Jubbal dynasty date back to the 12th century. Raja Ugar Chand of Sirmur maintained a summer palace at Soonpur, present-day Hatkoti, situated along the banks of the Pabbar River. During one such stay in the hills, a catastrophic flood caused by torrential rains devastated the Sirmur capital after the Giri River overflowed, resulting in the loss of the family’s ancestral dominion.

Separated from their former kingdom, members of the royal family remained in the mountainous region and gradually established authority in the valleys surrounding the Pabbar River. This marked the foundation of what would eventually become the princely state of Jubbal.

Rise of Jubbal State

Among the numerous hill thakuries scattered across the valleys of the Sutlej, Pabbar, and Giri rivers, Jubbal emerged as one of the most significant and influential. Though the state’s roots are ancient, the princely state of Jubbal formally consolidated around the early 19th century.

The region witnessed several political upheavals during this period. Jubbal came under Nepalese occupation between 1803 and 1815 during the Gurkha expansion into the western Himalayas. Following the Anglo-Gurkha War, British influence expanded across the hill states, and Jubbal later remained under British occupation from 1832 to 1840.

The rulers of Jubbal traditionally used the title “Rana,” reflecting their Rajput warrior heritage. The state covered approximately 288 square miles and was renowned for its dense forests of deodar cedar trees, which contributed significantly to the local economy.

Rana Karam Chand and the Foundations of Modern Jubbal

Among the early rulers, Rana Karam Chand is remembered as one of the architects of modern Jubbal. He established important administrative and cultural foundations for the state and played a key role in developing the town.

Rana Karam Chand constructed one of the first major royal palaces and temples at Deorha, helping transform Jubbal into an organized hill principality. His reign strengthened local governance and reinforced the spiritual and cultural identity of the region.

Raja Rana Sir Bhagat Chand: The Visionary Ruler

No account of Jubbal’s royal history is complete without Raja Rana Sir Bhagat Chand, one of the most distinguished rulers in the history of Himachal’s princely states.

Born in 1888, Bhagat Chand ascended the throne during a period of significant political and technological transformation in India. A progressive and reform-minded ruler, he became widely respected for introducing modernization to Jubbal while preserving its cultural heritage.

In 1911, Jubbal achieved a historic milestone under his leadership when a pioneering hydro-electric plant was established in the state. This remarkable initiative brought electricity to Jubbal at a time when electrification was still rare in many parts of India, making the small Himalayan state one of the early adopters of hydroelectric power in the region.

In recognition of his administrative abilities and loyalty, the British formally granted him the title of “Raja” in 1918, elevating his status from Rana to Raja Rana Sir Bhagat Chand.

His reign is remembered for progressive reforms, infrastructure development, and efforts to improve governance and public welfare. Raja Bhagat Chand remains one of the most celebrated rulers among the princely states of the western Himalayas.

Jubbal in the Modern Era

Following India’s independence, Jubbal acceded to the Indian Union and later became part of Himachal Pradesh. Over time, the former princely state transformed into a peaceful Himalayan town while retaining traces of its royal heritage.

Today, Jubbal is best known for its flourishing apple orchards, which form the backbone of the local economy. Surrounded by forests, rivers, and traditional Himalayan architecture, the region continues to reflect the legacy of its former rulers.

Historic sites associated with the royal family, including old palaces and temples, remain important cultural landmarks that connect present-day Himachal Pradesh with its princely past.

Legacy of the Jubbal Royal Family

The Royal Family of Jubbal occupies a distinguished place in the history of the Himalayan hill states. From their legendary origins linked to Sirmur to their role in shaping one of the region’s progressive princely states, the rulers of Jubbal left behind a legacy defined by resilience, modernization, and cultural patronage.

Their story is not merely one of royalty, but also of adaptation — a dynasty that transformed adversity into opportunity and helped shape the identity of a unique Himalayan kingdom.

Today, the legacy of Jubbal lives on through its traditions, temples, landscapes, and the enduring memory of rulers such as Raja Rana Sir Bhagat Chand, whose vision brought modernity to the mountains long before it became commonplace.
