India has always been known for its grand royal weddings, rich in tradition, heritage, and luxury. From the majestic palaces of Rajasthan to the regal courts of Mysore, weddings in Indian royal families have been extravagant affairs, reflecting the culture, power, and opulence of the times. While the essence of these ceremonies remains rooted in tradition, modern royal weddings of India have evolved with changing times.

Royal Weddings in the Past: A Grand Affair

1. Lavish Celebrations in Palaces

Historically, Indian royal weddings were week-long celebrations held in grand palaces and forts. Maharajas and Nawabs spent vast amounts of wealth on these events, ensuring that their unions were memorable and magnificent.

2. Processions with Elephants and Horses

The groom, often a prince or a nobleman, arrived in a royal procession (baraat) riding a decorated elephant or horse, followed by drummers, dancers, and courtiers. This showcased the family’s strength and prestige.

3. Gold and Jewel-Adorned Brides

Royal brides were dressed in heavily embroidered silk sarees or lehengas, adorned with gold and diamond jewelry. Some weddings featured crowns or bejewelled headpieces, symbolizing their status.

4. Religious and Cultural Rituals

Each dynasty followed its own unique traditions, from elaborate Vedic rituals in Rajput weddings to Persian-influenced customs in Mughal marriages. The wedding mandaps were often decorated with gold and rare flowers.

5. Royal Feasts and Entertainment

The wedding feasts were a showcase of the kingdom’s wealth, featuring hundreds of dishes, including exotic meats, rich curries, and sweet delicacies. Performances by classical dancers, poets, and musicians added to the grandeur.

Modern Royal Weddings: Tradition Meets Contemporary Style

1. Destination Royal Weddings

Many present-day royal families host their weddings in heritage hotels such as the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur or City Palace in Udaipur, where history blends with luxury. These weddings attract global attention, often attended by celebrities and dignitaries.

2. Designer Outfits with a Royal Touch

While modern royal brides still wear traditional attire, they now collaborate with top designers like Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Manish Malhotra, who blend regal heritage with contemporary fashion.

3. Exclusive Yet Grand Celebrations

Unlike the past, where the entire kingdom participated, today’s royal weddings are more private and intimate, attended by close friends, international celebrities, and business tycoons. However, they still maintain the grandeur of old traditions.

4. High-End Catering and Global Cuisine

While traditional Rajasthani, Mughlai, and South Indian dishes remain, modern royal weddings now feature international cuisines, Michelin-star chefs, and even live food stations to cater to diverse guests.

5. Social Media and Digital Presence

Unlike historical weddings, which were known through word-of-mouth and paintings, modern royal weddings are widely covered by the media. Photos and videos are shared on Instagram and news platforms, making them viral worldwide.

Famous Indian Royal Weddings in Recent Times

  1. Maharaja Padmanabh Singh of Jaipur – His sister Princess Diya Kumari’s son’s wedding in 2023 was a blend of Rajputana traditions and modern elegance.
  2. Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar of Mysore – The 2016 wedding was a traditional affair held in the Mysore Palace.
  3. Princess Mohena Kumari of Rewa – The 2019 royal wedding in Madhya Pradesh showcased rich Rajput traditions.

Conclusion

While Indian royal weddings have evolved over time, they still reflect tradition, elegance, and luxury. Whether in grand forts of the past or in luxurious heritage hotels today, these weddings continue to captivate the world with their charm and splendor.
